Low AMH levels meaning

amh fertility nutrition women's health Sep 14, 2023

Low AMH? I see women with low AMH way too often. I was there, with low AMH at age 26, when i was told I am premenopausal, that I need to freeze my eggs and take hormones for the rest of my life. An then, a few years later I conceived naturally!

In the intricate tapestry of fertility, AMH is but a single thread, often misconstrued as the entire narrative. Many OBGyns lean heavily on AMH as a diagnostic benchmark for ovarian reserve, pre-menopause and ovarian failure resulting in many many anxious women who think they have missed their chance in beginning mothers.

An isolated AMH value, devoid of context, can paint a misleading portrait, leading many women into the labyrinth of undue stress and anxiety.

Remember, fertility isn't dictated by numbers alone. It's a confluence of biology, environment, spirit, and time.

Let's tread cautiously, seeking comprehensive understanding over singular metrics. After all, the essence of our reproductive journey isn't captured in a test tube but in the vast expanse of our holistic well-being.

My advice as a nutritionist working with women to improve their fertility and help them conceive is this; Forget about AMH and instead focus on things you can actually influence such as improving your egg quality, estrogen to progesterone ratio, endometrium support, stress reduction, gut health and toxic load.

So here is the things it is worth focusing instead;

1. Improving egg quality

Egg quality plays a pivotal role in conception. Enhance it through antioxidants, a balanced diet, and removing caffeine or alcohol.

2. Balancing Your Hormones

The estrogen-to-progesterone ratio is crucial. Keeping these hormones balanced supports regular cycles and optimal fertility.

3. Supporting the Endometrium

A thick and healthy endometrial lining is vital for embryo implantation. Stay hydrated, and consider foods rich in vitamin E and omega-3s.

4. Stress Reduction

Stop worrying about AMH! Obsessing about this marker is counterproductive to your conception journey. Explore other markers such as vitamin D, inflammatory markers, CoQ10 to name a few.

5. Shift your focus from AMH to functional markers

AMH is NOT the whole picture. Infertility is also a result of an imbalanced gut, heavy metals toxicity, disregulated adrenals. You can test all of these.

6. Cultivate Deep Trust

Believe that your body is capable. A positive mindset and deep trust can be just as important as physical health. Trust your body, trust your baby, trust the process.

Every journey is unique. It's essential to approach fertility holistically, considering all factors. This is exactly what I do with my fertility clients. We look at the WHOLE picture and not the individual aspects. Conception is a true miracle that includes all aspects of our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
